Government Officials and Academics Converge at NMIMS for the Steering Committee, NEP 2020
MUMBAI, India, Oct. 11, 2023 /PRNewswire/ — Shri Vile Parle Kelvani Mandal and SVKM’s NMIMS Deemed-to-be University hosted a meeting of the Steering Committee, NEP 2020 appointed by the Higher & Technical Education Department, Government of Maharashtra, at its Mumbai campus on the 9th and 10th of October 2023. The meeting was graced by the Hon’ble Minister, Higher & Technical Education Dept., Govt. of Maharashtra Shri. Chandrakantdada Patil, Hon’ble Principal Secretary, Higher & Technical Education Dept., Govt. of Maharashtra Shri. Vikas Chandra Rastogi and officials from the Government of Maharashtra.
NEP 2020 lays particular emphasis on the development of the creative potential of each student. It is based on the principle that education must develop not only cognitive capacities, such as critical thinking and problem-solving but also social, ethical, and emotional capacities and dispositions. It aims to foster a comprehensive education system, bringing together theoretical and practical aspects. It also has a unique feature of multiple entries – multiple exits for the programs.
Moreover, the education policy aims to fix the shortfalls in existing higher and technical education by moving along an education system consisting of a cluster of multidisciplinary institutions across the country. It aims to promote research among educators and aspiring students by establishing a National Research Foundation to fund outstanding peer-reviewed research and to actively seed research in universities and colleges.
Recognising the potential of this game-changing education policy, NMIMS has already started offering four-year undergraduate programs under select streams as prescribed in the NEP 2020.
The confluence of senior academicians and government officials on the same platform led to an insightful discussion on the transformative National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and its effective implementation in higher and technical education institutions across Maharashtra. Govt. of Maharashtra has been very keen on implementing NEP 2020 in all Institutions in Maharashtra. As a first stage, in the academic year 2023-24, all the state public Universities in Maharashtra implemented the scheme at undergraduate programmes in all the autonomous colleges of Arts, Science, Commerce & Engineering and University Departments. Post-graduate programmes are also implemented in all affiliated colleges and University Departments. The Steering Committee is now taking efforts to implement NEP 2020 in all the non-autonomous colleges in Maharashtra from the academic year 2024-25.
