MUMBAI, India, Aug. 21, 2023 /PRNewswire/ — SVKM’s NMIMS Kirit P. Mehta School of Law (KPMSOL) celebrated the momentous inauguration of its B.A., LL.B. (Hons.) & B.B.A., LL.B. (Hons.) batch of 2023 – 2024 (2023 – 2028) on Tuesday, July 18th 2023. The event garnered resounding success and was graced by the esteemed presence of two eminent legal dignitaries – Mr. Shahrukh Jimi Kathawalla, Retd. Justice of the High Court of Bombay, as the Chief Guest, and Mr. Suhas Tuljapurkar, Founding and Managing Partner, Legasis as the Guest of Honour. The event witnessed an enriching exchange of insights and experiences from their illustrious legal careers.

The ceremony commenced with the traditional lighting of the Lamp and Saraswati Vandana, followed by a soul-stirring rendition of the NMIMS Anthem, setting the tone for this auspicious occasion. Dr. Durgambini Patel, the Dean of KPMSOL, took the stage and delivered an enlightening introduction to the institution, shedding light on its vision, mission, and unwavering commitment to nurturing competent legal professionals through a comprehensive blend of academics and extracurricular activities.

An inspiring message sent by Shri. Harshal Shah, the esteemed Mentor of KPMSOL, followed, as he shared invaluable insights and experiences with the students through his message, encouraging them to pursue excellence and uphold the values of justice and integrity throughout their legal careers.

Distinguished faculty member, Dr. Ashish Daptardar, then took the stage, highlighting the distinctive features of the institution’s teaching pedagogy. KPMSOL’s unique emphasis on the case study model and class-debate methods fosters analytical thinking and a profound understanding of legal principles among the students. Additionally, the institution has ingeniously integrated compulsory credit-based Internship and Moot Court subjects to provide practical exposure and enhance advocacy skills in the aspiring legal minds.

Chief Guest, Mr. Shahrukh Jimi Kathawalla, during his address, emphasised: “To the students, I would like to emphasize how fortunate you are to have secured admission here. I strongly urge you to make the most of your time and absorb all the knowledge and learning opportunities that come your way. My personal journey as a law student, lawyer, and eventually as a judge has been a long road, but I have gained numerous valuable lessons. My aspiration to become a lawyer started when I was around 7-9 years old when I participated in an elocution competition on the topic, ‘My aim in life.’ Since then, I have always had a clear goal in mind. Having a clear goal can be very helpful for students, as it provides direction and motivation.”

He further added, “Fortunately, the perception of law as a fallback option has decreased significantly over the years. Thanks to the efforts of law colleges in our country, they are training students to become excellent lawyers. Today’s youngsters are sincere and strongly desire to pursue law.”

Mr. Suhas Tuljapurkar, Founding and Managing Partner, Legasis, shared his journey in the legal tech world and stated: “Talking about this profession, I think we are at a very interesting space in the legal framework. I started working in legal tech back in ’84-’85. When the Bhopal Gas tragedy happened, by accident, I got involved in the legal field. In the year ’89-’90, I developed a small database while I was doing my MBA and diploma in computer management. I was writing databases and trying to write environment-related databases way back in ’88-’89. We looked at 500 cases and created a small database. So, that is where I started my journey in the legal field. From 2006, we started and promoted Legasis.”

The event concluded on a high note, leaving the attendees inspired and enthusiastic about the enriching journey that lies ahead for the new batch of law students at KPMSOL. The NMIMS Kirit P. Mehta School of Law (KPMSOL) inauguration served as an excellent platform for students to gain valuable insights into real-world legal practices, bridging the gap between theory and application in law. Experiencing the complexities of the legal profession through practical examples had a profound impact on students’ development, critical thinking, and professionalism for their future careers. NMIMS believes such initiatives to be crucial in the education of law students, offering opportunities to learn from professionals with practical experience, inspiring passion for their studies, and cultivating a deeper appreciation for their profession and its challenges.
